The Voice of Jeremiah’s rebuke and prophecy: Disaster is coming upon you, America, and you will fall because you have sinned against the LORD your God!

It is God who once rescued and freed you from the power of religious oppression and brought you safely to a land of freedom. But rather than follow Him, you have chosen to follow the evil practices introduced by deceitful leaders and false prophets.

America, you have also secretly done many things that are not pleasing to the LORD your God!

You have built pagan shrines for yourselves in all your towns, from the smallest outpost to the largest walled city. You have set up sacred pillars and shrines at the top of every hill and under every green tree. You have offered sacrifices on all the hilltops, just like the nations the LORD had driven from the land ahead of you.

People of America, you have done many evil things, arousing the LORD’s anger.

Yes, you worship idols and do evil, despite the LORD’s specific and repeated warnings. Again and again the LORD had sent His prophets to warn you: Thus says the LORD, “Turn from all your evil ways. Obey My commands and decrees—the entire law that I commanded your ancestors to obey, and that I gave you through My servants the prophets.”

But, America, you will not listen! You are as stubborn as your ancestors who also refused to believe in the LORD their God. Like them, you have rejected God’s decrees and the covenant He has made with you long ago, and like your ancestors, you have despised all God’s warnings.

America, you have worshiped worthless idols and done evil, so you have become worthless yourselves.

You follow the example of the nations around you, disobeying the LORD’s command not to imitate them. You reject all the commands of the LORD your God and make idols from wood, metal, and gold. You set up shrines and worship Satan and all the evil forces of heaven. In so doing, you have sacrificed the souls of your own sons and daughters.

America, you consult fortune-tellers and practice sorcery and sell yourselves to evil! You have aroused the LORD’s anger!

Therefore, because the LORD is very angry with you, America, He will sweep you away from His presence. As the result of your rebellion and disobedience, the LORD will reject you and your descendents! He will punish you by handing you over to your attackers until He has banished you from His presence.

America, you have allowed evil, wicked, and foolish leaders to lead you to commit a great sin. And you have persisted in all their evil ways. You have not turned from these sins. Therefore, the LORD finally, will sweep you away from His presence, just as all his prophets have warned you!

America, because you have not repented and turned from your evil ways and turned back to Him, the LORD is about to cause you to fall to your own destruction![1]

Thus says the LORD: America “Your own wickedness shall punish and correct you, and your turning from Me and desertion of faith shall condemn you; Know therefore and recognize that this is an evil and bitter thing: first, you have forsaken the Lord your God; second, you are indifferent to Me and the fear of Me is not in you. You will learn how bitter and wrong it is to abandon Me, the Lord your God, and no longer to remain faithful to Me. I, the Sovereign Lord Almighty, have spoken.”[2]

The Voice of Jeremiah: This is the message that the LORD revealed to the prophet.

How long, O LORD, must I call for help? Violence is everywhere! Why do you make me see such trouble and evil? Why must I watch all this misery? Wherever I look, I see ruin, destruction and violence. I am surrounded by a nation of people who will not listen and repent. They only love to argue and fight. Their law has become weak, paralyzed, and useless, and there is no justice in the courts. Evil people get the better of the righteous, and so justice is perverted.

Then the LORD spoke: “Keep watching the nations around you, and you will be astonished at what you see, for I am going to do something that you will not believe when you hear about it. I am raising-up the Babylonians, a cruel and violent people, and bringing them to power. They will march across the world and conquer other lands. They are a dreaded people; they spread fear and terror, and are notorious for their cruelty. In pride, they are a law to themselves and promote their own honor; they do whatever they like.”

“Their troops come from distant lands. They are faster than leopards and fiercer than hungry wolves. They come swooping down like eagles to attack and devour their prey. Their army hordes advance in violent conquest and everyone is terrified as they approach. Their captives are as numerous as grains of sand. They treat kings with contempt and laugh at high officials. No fortress can stop them—they pile up earth against it and capture it. Then they sweep on like the wind and are gone, these men whose power is their god.” I, the Sovereign Lord Almighty, have spoken.”

The Voice of Jeremiah: O LORD my God, my Holy One, you who are eternal— surely you do not plan to wipe us out? O LORD, my Rock, you have sent these Babylonians to correct us, to punish us for our many sins. But You are pure and cannot stand the sight of evil people doing wrong. Will You wink at their treachery? Should You be silent while the wicked swallow up people more righteous than they? [1]

I will climb my watchtower and wait to see what the LORD will tell me to say and what answer He will give to my complaint. [2]

Then the LORD spoke: “Write the vision so plainly that everyone who passes may be able to read it easily and quickly as he hurries by. Put it in writing, because it is not yet time for it to come true. But the time is coming quickly, and what I show you will come true. It may seem slow in coming, but wait for it; it will certainly take place, and it will not be delayed.”

“And this is the message: Those who are evil will not survive, but those who are righteous will live because they are faithful to God. Wealth is deceitful. Greedy people are proud and restless—like death itself they are never satisfied. That is why they conquer nation after nation for themselves. But soon, the conquered people will taunt their conquerors and show their scorn for them. They will say, ‘America, you’ve become rich by extortion, taking what isn’t yours, but how much longer can this go on? Now you will get what you deserve; you are doomed!’”

“Suddenly, America, before you know it, you who have conquered others will be in debt yourselves and be forced to pay interest. Enemies will come and make you tremble. They will plunder you! You have plundered the people of many nations, but now those who have survived will plunder you because of the murders you have committed and because of your violence against the people of the world and its cities.”

“You are doomed, America! You have made your nation rich with what you took by violence, and have tried to make your own home safe from harm and danger! But your schemes have brought shame on your nation! By destroying many nations you have only brought ruin on yourself!  Even the stones of the walls cry out against you, and the rafters echo the cry.”

“You are doomed, America! Once a nation founded on Me and My Word, you have founded a new nation, one built up by crime, murder, deceit, and wickedness. The nations you conquered wore themselves out in useless labor, and all they have built will go up in flames. The LORD Almighty has done this. But the earth will be as full of the knowledge of the LORD’S glory as the seas are full of water.

You are doomed, America! In your fury you humiliated and disgraced your neighbors; you made them stagger as though they were drunk. You in turn will be covered with shame instead of honor. You yourself will drink and stagger. The LORD will make you drink your own cup of punishment, and your honor will be turned to disgrace. I, the Sovereign Lord Almighty, have spoken.”

The Voice of Jeremiah’s plea: O America, the judgment hand of Almighty God is coming down upon you! But, the Lord Jesus Christ the Savior of the world specializes in hopeless cases. He breaks the power of sin and He sets the prisoner free from the bondage of his sin.[3] Repent, mourn your sin, turn back to God, and be saved before it is too late!

The Voice of Jeremiah’s Cry: O America, I wish my head were a well of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears, so that I could cry day and night for you, my people, who will soon be slaughtered. Oh, that I could go away and forget you, my people, and live in a shack for travelers in the desert. You are all unfaithful, a mob of traitors—a pack of treacherous liars always ready to tell lies! Dishonesty instead of truth rules the land!

O America, you do one evil thing after another and do not acknowledge the LORD as your God! Therefore beware of your neighbor! Be on guard against your friends! Don’t even trust your relatives; for relative takes advantage of relative and everyone slanders his friends. You all fool and mislead each other; no one tells the truth! You have taught your tongues to lie and will not give up your sinning! You do one violent thing after another, and one deceitful act follows another! You dwell in the midst of deceit; through deceit you utterly refuse to know the LORD![1]

Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I will refine them! I will melt them by the process of affliction to remove the dross and test them, for what else can I do because of the sin of My people? For their tongues shoot lies like poisoned arrows. They speak friendly words to their neighbors while scheming in their heart to lay a snare and ambush them.  Should I not punish them for this?” says the LORD. “Shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?” [2]

I, the Sovereign Lord Almighty, have spoken.”[3]
